Tesco Dunmurry Relocation Public Consultation

The planning application for the new Dunmurry store has now been lodged and will be available to view on the Council’s website where you can make comments to planners directly.

You’re invited to share your views on the proposed relocation of Tesco in Dunmurry from their existing store in the Kingsway Shopping Centre to part of the Makro cash and carry off Kingsway.

Tesco currently operate from a 2,431 sq.m gross store at the Kingsway Shopping Centre in Dunmurry. This store is occupied on a leasehold basis, with the current lease due to expire in 2027. The Tesco in Dunmurry will therefore close in 2027.

In order to ensure continuity of trade in Dunmurry at the point of closure of their existing store, Tesco propose to open a new store within part of the existing Makro cash and carry located at Kingsway in Dunmurry.

The Makro cash and carry provides wholesale goods to retailers and local businesses.

The current building in Dunmurry is 9,764 sq.m gross floorspace over a 4.1 ha site. The building operates over a single floor, with a small mezzanine level for offices. The unit has a large service yard (including a lorry holding area) and a surface car park with a total of 708 parking spaces. Access to the site is currently gained from Kingsway.

The Proposals

Tesco propose to open a new store within part of the Makro cash and carry at Kingsway. This will be achieved by subdividing the building to create a new c. 4,000 sq.m Tesco store. The proposed development will also ensure continuity for Tesco colleagues employed at the existing store.

The existing entrance to the Makro store will become the entrance/exit to the Tesco element of the building (with the existing exit becoming the entrance/exit to the Makro after subdivision). There will be no significant alterations to the existing elevations.

The car park will be reconfigured to provide dedicated parking facilities for both Tesco and Makro customers.

Floorspace within the Makro will be reconfigured to improve its efficiency, including the installation of high bay shelving. This will ensure that there is no reduction of the wholesale retail offer available to business customers. It will also ensure no impact on colleagues employed in the Makro.
